We measure the Amazon's atmosphere

LabMet is the Multidisciplinary Meteorological Instrumentation Laboratory of the Federal University of Western Pará (Ufopa). We operate instruments on towers, on the ground and on balloons.

The laboratory

Field data to understand the region's climate

We monitor what the forest and the atmosphere exchange with each other: carbon dioxide, methane, water vapour and energy.

The laboratory supports the Bachelor's programme in Atmospheric Sciences and research projects at the Institute of Engineering and Geosciences. The team installs, calibrates and maintains the instruments, carries out the field campaigns and prepares the data for analysis.

Measurements take place at the Ufopa Experimental Farm and in the Tapajós National Forest. The laboratory is based at the Technology Laboratories Centre (NTL), on the Tapajós Campus.

Research

Ongoing projects

Red research aircraft inside a hangar, surrounded by equipment cases
Since 2025

CarbonARA-Brazil

An international campaign that measures greenhouse gases and fire emissions from the ground, the air and space over a 100 by 100 km area around Santarém. Ufopa coordinates the local activities.

Since 2023

Radiosonde tracking

Reception of radiosonde signals during ascent and descent to obtain high-resolution vertical profiles of the atmosphere, follow the sondes' drift and locate where they land.
